SYNOPSIS

In a new film, written and edited by Anita Naughton, Jim Venturi has directed a highly personal portrait of his parents Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.

The ‘starchitect’ couple turned the architecture world upside down from the 1950s to the 1970s with their revolutionary thinking that elevated American billboards to the same status as Venetian palaces.

They inspired designers to draw their own conclusions from their favourite buildings and cities instead of following dogmatic standards of American and European educational institutes. These lessons ultimately led to the birth of postmodernism.

Jim Venturi sketches a complete portrait of the uproar they caused: from a sexist Philip Johnson and a bitter Leon Krier to a strong Scott Brown, who succeeded in holding her ground in the misogynous architecture world.

FROM DENISE SCOTT BROWN

“There’s nothing like seeing a building that’s been in your mind, and, then, there it is in reality. It makes you want to weep.”
